The ninth season of American Ninja Warrior — a TV show in which competitors scale walls and climb across obstacles — just ended. From its first to its eighth season, the show’s applications increased by a factor of 70 — from 1,000 to 70,000. Extreme fitness experiences are carrying weight with viewers—and consumers. The idea of being a superhero ninja is real.
At ZavaZone, we’ve figured out our own way to jump into this craze. In addition to standard trampoline park attractions like dodgeball and basketball, we also have our unique Adventure Zone, which contains both a high ropes course and a ninja course.
Our ninja warrior course has the same elements of American Ninja Warrior, such as the infamous warped wall; clients can also run, jump, climb, and balance, to give guests the experience of being on the show. Our high ropes course is made up of 26 obstacles that we change often. We provide our participants with harnesses so they can complete our course at 20 feet above the ground. The course includes thin ropes to practice balance, nets for climbing, planks to walk on, swinging tunnels, moving bridges, and a zip line.
Our adventure courses are a workout, thereby appealing to an audience that is looking for an experience that’s more than what can be found at a typical trampoline park. With space dedicated to obstacle and ninja courses in addition to trampolines, we reach a whole new demographic and differentiate ourselves from the trampoline park pack. It’s working, too: our co-owner Joe Henry told Baltimore Sun in June 2017 that our Rockville location sees 7,500 jumpers every month.
The obstacle course fitness trend could be here to stay. According to Heather Crowe, associate professor of kinesiology at Towson, this type of workout is natural for human beings. Jumping and moving freely is how kids learn to exercise by jumping and moving in these types of ways. Obstacle courses are more self-directed and mandate a lower skill threshold.
